This exhibition traces the interest of key Modernist artists in the art of Mesopotamia from the fourth and third millenia (also referred to as Sumerian Art). The archaeological findings from Syria and Iraq after the end of WWI became a focus for intellectuals in the late 1920s and had an impact on the modernist idioms of Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miro and others. Exhibition Info: A World of Marble will examine how marble as a tradition-bound material is understood and interpreted through modern and contemporary art. The exhibition forms part of the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art’s iconic marble building designed by world-famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
