The Henry Moore Foundation has this summer launched
the largest and most important Henry Moore retrospective ever to be seen
outside of Europe. Featured in three locations across Brazil, ’Henry
Moore, Uma Retrospectiva’ contains over 240 of the artist’s works
including drawings, graphics and sculpture.
Touring to S?o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia over a 7-month period, the exhibitions span 63 years of Moore’s prolific and long career (1922 - 1985). In a country famed for its rich heritage of museums and galleries, these outstanding venues in turn play host to 117 sculptures, of which 56 are on pedestals and 61 in show cases. The works on paper consist of 72 drawings in 68 frames and 55 etchings and lithographs.
David Mitchinson and Anita Feldman Bennet, curators at The Henry Moore Foundation, have specifically selected works to illustrate Moore’s reputation as one of the world’s most important sculptors. David Mitchinson comments:
‘The sheer scale of these exhibitions is enormous. This is the first showing of Moore’s work in Brazil since the artist’s participation in the 2nd S?o Paulo Bienal of 1953 and to return in this size is nothing short of epic.’
This has been reflected in the shows’ catalogues. The Foundation’s curators have supervised the choice of material to be featured, and a different version will be produced for each of the three venues, including new essays by Brazilian scholars.
The exhibitions have been organised by the British Council in London and S?o Paulo in collaboration with The Henry Moore Foundation, Perry Green and the three receiving venues.
