More InformationStudy of the tradition of English art from Anglo-Saxon times to the 20th century, noting a revival in British art. In a largely pictorial survey entitled The Contemporary Scene on pages 185-247 there is a full-page illustration of Sculpture, 1934 ironstone with the caption: Moore Henry: Sculptor. Had as forerunners Gaudier Gill Epstein. In wood and stone considers natural grain and colour; simplifies surface occasionally incising it. His work is abstracted from organic form from parts of the human figure. Realizes the value of prehistoric and early Celtic carving pebbles stone hammers stone incisions. Must have looked at early palaeolithic stones. Weight and mass; sense of silhouette sense of creating silhouette within the stone by holes through it; expresses surface texture and space."
