Description: Radio 3 interview 27 May 1970 on occasion of Marlborough Fine Art exhibition of facsimiles and originals. Moore describes how he discovered the shelterers by chance when travelling home on the Underground. He made notes and drew the following morning, repeating this process for a couple of weeks. Kenneth Clark saw his sketchbook and invited him to become a war artist. Scenes related in his mind to art historical reclining figures and to Mother and Child theme. Tunnels, also of sculptural interest, influenced his later sculpture: using drapery would not have happened I don't think if I hadn't done the Shelter Drawings." Sense of impending doom outside without any physical action or movement gave a sense of Greek drama; and also related to Moore's static sculptures which convey a sense of action. Compared briefly with Goya's Disasters of War.
Moore has experienced no comparable event since other than domestic matters like the birth of his daughter and he has not been able to recreate the emotional state that produced the shelter sketches."

Description: Produced in association with R.M. Productions (Munich). Moore is interviewed at Much Hadham by John Read who introduces the artist and outlines his career. Sources of inspiration surrounding Moore's desk are explained and discussed, including Cézanne's Bathers and Moore's sculptural versions of the figures (Three Bathers: After Cézanne, 1978 bronze), Dürer's Portrait of Conrad Verkell; and works by Seurat and Rembrandt. Moore shows pages from a sketchbook influenced by Rembrandt's drawing techniques. Moore's pre-war drawings are shown, with comments by the artist on the science of drawing. The War Drawings are explained by Moore: his notes, sketchbooks and larger drawings as a war artist. The initial discovery of the Reclining Figures and perspective of tunnels developed into an interest in specific figures and attitudes and the use of drapery. These are related to works by Masaccio and Mantegna. Coal Mine Drawings are shown with male figures in action in darkness. Post-war works are outlined: Figures in Settings, influence of country in hedgerow and tree sketches and sheep. Moore's printmaking activities are seen, with the appearance of Alistair Grant on etchings and Stanley Jones describing lithographic processes. Brief general views of Moore's studios and his drawings of his grandson complete the film.

Since its first incarnation a further "essaying" environment has been created to enable users to build their own multimedia essays using the materials available on the videodisc.
Side one of the disc is devoted to Henry Moore with side two focusing on Modern British Sculpture from the Tate's collection of 20th century art.
Tate Gallery Liverpool and Henry Moore Sculpture Trust plan to launch a Sculpture Interactive outreach network in 1993. Participants in the network will receive the videodisc software and support material to enable them to produce and exchange multimedia "essays"."
