The municipal authorities forgot to pay casting costs for ten years, then offer nothing less than a site in front of the Pazzi Chapel in Santa Croce in their attempt to get the bronze back, after it had been reclaimed because of Florence's failure to meet its obligations. The site is seen as totally unsuitable for the Moore bronze.

A solution has been found to allow the work to remain in Florence permanently, after reparations for the municipality's gaffe and negotiations to get round the problems of death duties by lending the work indefinitely to the British Consulate, which in turn decides to place it on display.

Description: Story of Warrior with Shield, 1953-1954 bronze donation, and choice of site. Religious community of Santa Croce accept it only because it was demanded by the Henry Moore Foundation and upheld by the authorities so that the work could stay in the city. No historic or aesthetic links between the sculpture and its site. This is nothing but a diplomatic and bureaucratic solution to the donation's history of problems.
