152-153(2 illus) Henry Moore: the monumental.
In the chapter on sculpture includes illustrations of a 1939 drawing and a 1957 bronze notes Moore's early influences and concern for vitality rather than conventional beauty. Discusses the appreciation of his works: "Moore's ability to transpose anatomical facts into wondrous visual relationships provides his bronzes with ageless and universal tendencies." Notes their production: "versions of a modeling in plaster or clay may be reproduced in bronze or even stone or wood." Concludes that "the majority of Moore's sculptures are actually designed as immense structures to be displayed outdoors in parks or adjacent to public buildings".

Moore's work during the ten years after his 1925 visit to Italy, with reference to the influences of alien rather than classical cultures on his carvings. The Six Garden Reliefs, 1926 Portland stone were seen as the only way he would be likely to get his work into the Open Air. Conceptions of his work on a larger scale than was possible at the time are seen as prophetic of the monumental works to come. Incorporates contemporary statements by Moore.

Short letter of reply to Moore commenting on change of title from 'Notes on Sculpture' to 'The Artist Speaks' for Moore's article in the 18 August 1937 issue of The Listener (See 0009196), and how the length of the text made the inclusion of more photographs impracticable.
There are three other passing references to Moore in this collection: on The Artist Speaks series, on a possible article on Moore by K. Clark, and referring to a photograph of a Moore sculpture which appeared in The Listener, 9 November 1950 (See 0008307).
