Description: U.M.I. (Ann Arbor) facsimile made 1993 from microfilm master copy. A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Art History. Considers patronage, sculpture and architecture, siting, etc. Produced from 105 personal interviews, and from questionnaires.
180,302-325,583,613 etc.(6 illus) Henry Moore.
The main section on Moore is within a discussion 266-325 Familiar Figures: Epstein, Hepworth, Moore. Commentary mainly on Time-Life Screen 1952-1953 Portland stone; Locking Piece 1963-1964 bronze; and Sundial 1965-1966 bronze. Incorporates statements by Moore, including a long quotation from a 2 June 1970 interview. Certain things must be considered when sculpture is put with architecture. First there is size. I am not talking about scale but simply physical size... Then there is rhythm: the sculpture should be either in contrast or in harmony with its site. Contrast usually works better... Colour and tone values are important... One must consider the space that there is between the sculpture and the surrounding architecture. I don't like sculpture pinned on to architecture like a broach pinned to a woman's dress... The sculpture doesn't need to have anything to do with the function of the building. The position of the sun is also important... The most important consideration is whether it is a good or bad piece of sculpture... As far as the work itself the main point is in being able to see it... I am all for having a lot of sculpture in towns and parks... I prefer mine in a natural setting..." See also 0004180."
