84-96 COSTA Lucio. The architect and contemporary society.
97-102 MOORE Henry. The sculptor in modern society.
(Sculptors like using their hands and working particular materials. They have a sensibility for shapes and forms, and the problems that arise in the manipulation of such materials problems of mass and volume of light in relation to form and of volume in relation to space..." The sculptor communicates these problems by exhibition resulting in a public art form. At times in history the sculptor was a member of a unified society with a definite function. Today he is more of an individual and a specialist. Varying political social or national roles of artists are noted. Today the artist has to satisfy private patrons or a variety of public museums or corporate bodies. This diversity results in a flexibility on the part of the artist according to the setting for the sculpture. Restrictions may be imposed on the freedom of creation. Public bodies should have the courage to commission forward-looking works which will influence public opinion rather than playing for safety and providing "what the public does not object to". Cooperation with other artists and planners in what becomes part of a unit rather than a piece of sculpture complete in itself is essential from the moment that the building is conceived. "Too often in modern buildings...the work of art is an afterthought a piece of decoration added to fill a space that is felt to be too empty." State patronage and the art market are discussed briefly and Moore prefers inde pendence on the part of the artist to subordination of his creative freedom to some central authority. Personal privacy needs to be maintained. "The creative process is in some sense a secret process." Organizations like U.N.E.S.C.O. should guarantee the freedom and independence of the artist).
103-11 VILLON Jacques. The painter in modern society.
112-117 ROUAULT Georges. The painter's rights in his work.
