Place Published: Athens
Year: 1951
Date & Collation: (3-25 March).24pp(12 illus).Biog.Introduction by Herbert READ.Text by Angelos PROCOPIOU.Text in Greek.
Description: 23 Sculptures 1929-1950, plus seven maquettes, 30 Drawings 1933-1948, two Textiles 1944 and 10 photographs of Sculpture 1929-1946. Includes three published statements by Henry Moore. In Procopiou's text, Moore's sculptures are seen as the realisation of the myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha who warmed the stones of Parnassus and gave re-birth to the Greeks. His art expresses the Genesis of a Deucalion and his Paradise is the plains of England. His forms are songs of the pre-Homeric union of moisture with rock of wind with vegetation." Other Classical references are seen in the works and the sculptor himself is seen as a true descendant of an epic era combining the consciousness of other races into his 20th century art. Holes are seen as open spaces for wood-deities to pass through. War Drawings are visual expressions of the second coming. His figures are actors in a Greek drama. His art springs directly from the eternal elements of the earth.
For English text see 0008033. Essentially the same exhibition and catalogue as for Brussels Paris Amsterdam Hamburg Düsseldorf Berne and Stockholm 1949-1952."
