Burcroft Foundry
In 1935, Henry and Irina Moore moved to Burcroft, a bungalow in Kent. Between 1938 and 1940, Moore cast a number of works in lead at his studio-workshop at Burcroft, with the assistance of Bernard Meadows, a student from Norwich School of Art.
We constructed our own kiln, and they were all in cast in lead … they were all done originally in lead by me collecting bits of lead piping, bits of the construction of armatures which were made of a lead composition, and using my wife’s pots and pans. You can melt lead on the kitchen stove, so it was quite possible for me to do my own casting, whereas with bronze the temperature is so high that you need a kiln, you need a furnace to do it. But with lead you can do it quite easily.
(Carroll 1973, p.42 – 0004018).
Among the works cast at Burcroft were:
LH 192, LH 193, LH 195, LH 201, LH 203, LH 204, LH 206, LH 207, LH 208, LH 209, LH 211, LH 212, LH 212a, and LH 213.
