The Corinthian Bronze Foundry was established by Leonard Grist (1879-1964) in around 1925. Grist had previously worked as a moulder at J.W. Singer & Sons Ltd and then as manager at the Morris Art Bronze Foundry. The Corinthian Foundry, which specialised in sand casting, was established at 39a Albert Road, Peckham (renamed in 1938 to 39a Consort Road) and remained at this address until 1972.

From 1927, the foundry, operating as The Corinthian Bronze Co. Ltd, advertised as a producer of architectural bronzework, and from 1945 as art bronze founders, producing large and small-scale statuary and reliefs. Although the foundry’s earlier output is not well documented, it was at its most active during the 1950s and 1960s and the business continued in various forms until 1982, after which the premises were taken over by the Meridian Bronze Company. Corinthian cast works by sculptors including Michael Ayrton, Elizabeth Frink, Maurice Lambert and Charles Wheeler.

Henry Moore used the Corinthian foundry to cast a number of works between 1952 and 1963. These included editions of Stringed Reclining Figure 1939, cast c.1956 (LH 197); Upright Motive No.8 1955-56, cast c.1958-62 (LH 388); Seated Woman 1957 (LH 435); and three casts of Working Model for UNESCO Reclining Figure 1957 (LH 415) (see All Works for a comprehensive list).
