Busato Fonderie, Paris
Sculptor Mario Busato-Strauss (1902-74) established a workshop and foundry in Paris with his brother in 1932. Born in Monza, Mario had moved to Paris in 1925 and previously worked at the Valsuani foundry, specialising in the lost-wax process of casting.
Busato’s foundry earned an international reputation and was used by artists including Pablo Gargallo, Jacques Lipchitz, Gino Severini and Étienne-Martin. Mario’s son, the sculptor Gualtiero Busato (b.1941), learned his trade in his father’s workshop.
Henry Moore only used the foundry for two casts of Seated Figure on Circular Steps 1957 (LH 437). The remainder of the edition was cast by the Valsuani Foundry.
