Red Notebook: Reclining Figures
Red Notebook: Reclining Figures
At one time known as Notebook 2. Disbanded notebook originally bound in red cloth-covered boards 260 x 185mm containing either 64 or 80 pages of off-white medium-weight wove paper 254 x 176mm in eight or ten signatures of eight plus front and rear endpapers. A few pages remain blank; others are missing or have not been identified. The pages were numbered from the front endpaper upper left on the recto, after some had been removed. (Circled numbers refer to ideas for graphic work.) Most of the pages were signed in 1984. The front endpaper is signed Henry Moore and the first page – numbered p.2 – bears an inscription listing possible subjects for drawings and graphics. The notebook was drawn from the front on most pages of the first six signatures; after HMF 74/76(43) some loose drawings HMF 74/76(43), (44), (44a) and (51) were inserted. Moore drew the last signature from the back, but the whole notebook is here catalogued from the front. Although the notebook has always been dated 1974-76, recent research indicates that it was begun in 1973; many of the drawings date from 1976 and were reworked in 1979.
