More Information

Disbanded notebook originally bound in red cloth-covered boards 260 x 185mm containing 80 pages of off-white medium-weight wove paper 254 x 176mm in ten signatures of eight plus front and rear endpapers. Seventy-two pages are known, though not all necessarily came from this notebook, see HMF 73(45). The notebook was drawn in 1970 and unbound in 1971, when some pages were redrawn. As the pages are unnumbered and many were trimmed no attempt has been made to reconstitute the notebook, although links are made through offset images where possible.

Moore named the drawings from this notebook 'pen exercises'. Most began as abstract calligraphic sketches inspired by Rembrandt. They were largely drawn in pen and black ink, on already wetted paper in order to give the effect of line etching.
