Off-white paper-covered boards 295 x 200mm originally containing 48 pages in six signatures of eight plus front and rear endpapers of off-white medium-weight wove paper 290 x 199mm. The front cover bears a label of masking tape inscribed in pen BONFIRE – LANDSCAPE /(INTERIORS added in pencil by another hand) and an inscription in pencil Cezanne (sic) Album/Christopher Hewett; £55 plus various numbers and scribbled markings. The pages were numbered in pencil top left on the recto, not by the artist. The front endpaper and the first page are blank; pp.7, 22-24, 38 and 40 have not been identified. HMF 80(316) and 81(369) are from this notebook but their page numbers remain unknown.

The notebook may have been started earlier than 1975. The New York 1979-80 exhibition catalogue dates pp.46-48 HMF 75/80(20), 75/80(21) and 75/80(22) as '1972?', while the Canterbury 1981 catalogue gives 1972 for HMF 75/80(21) and 75/80(22). The notebook was recorded in March 1979 as containing pp.2-21; no mention was made of the remaining pages, probably because they had not been drawn on. Pages 12, 13 and 46-48 are known to have been removed later in 1979; many of the remaining drawings were reworked during 1979-81, and other pages were drawn on at that time. By the end of 1981 all pages except pp.25 and 41 had been removed; these two pages, although later catalogued as 1975, are now thought to be c.1981 as the subject and medium are those of the latter date.
