More Information

Grey-green paper-covered notebook inscribed in pencil upper centre ESCO/UNESCO, originally containing 96 pages in twelve signatures of eight, plus a rear endpaper, of smooth cream medium-weight wove paper 292 x 242mm. The pages are numbered in pencil (not by the artist) lower left on the verso as far as p.45, after some had been removed. Only the first six signatures bear drawings. Page 2 contains a list of subjects for sculpture, page 9 is blank, while pages 10 and 11 bear notes for an interview with J.P. Hodin in November 1954 (published as an article entitled 'The Hidden Struggle' in the Observer, 24 November 1957, reproduced in James 1992, pp.94-9, and Wilkinson 2002, pp.117-20). Many of the pages bear drawings that relate to the Unesco commission of 1956 resulting in the reclining figure sculptures LH 414-416. Drawings with page numbers are kept in sequence, followed by seven pages known to be from this notebook and four others that are thought to have come from it.

As was the case with Heads, Figures and Ideas Notebook 1955-56 and Heads, Figures and Ideas Sketchbook 1956, some of the pages from this notebook were reproduced in Heads, Figures and Ideas 1958, the deluxe edition of which also contained mounted original drawings from the notebook.
