Remarks
There are two very similar versions of this maquette, one with a cleft head (LH 413a) and the other with a rounded head (LH 413b).
The original sales ledger has only one entry recorded, for an edition of 12+2 artist's copies, and does not differentiate between the different heads. It is therefore not known whether there were two different editions or whether the casts varied within the one edition. We have now decided to catalogue the two variations as differerent works.
The version with the cleft head (LH 413a) is illustrated on page 30 of the 2nd revised edition of Lund Humphries Vol. III under catalogue number LH 413a. The version with the rounded head (LH 413b) is incorrectly illustrated on page 32 of Lund Humphries Vol. IV under catalogue number LH 413a.
