Edition summary

Bronze edition of 2+1, cast 1966
Primary: plaster, 1966

Moore’s interest in making holes in forms to create a sense of mystery is here taken to its extreme, in a sculpture in which the two forms have themselves become apertures. The piece is monumental, yet surprisingly graceful. The holes penetrate the space between the two forms while at the same time framing the landscape. As one walks around the sculpture, the views through and relationship between the two forms continually changes in unexpected ways. The sculpture gives the impression of being the tip of an iceberg, with perhaps a much larger form below the ground. Indeed, the mass of bronze is in fact supported by a steel frame below. The work has been compared to a pair of scissors, thrust into the ground.
