More Information
The appeal of this design is its simplicity and clarity, yet at the same time the motifs remain unrecognisable and somewhat mysterious, like an ancient indecipherable script. The origin of the symbols is unknown; some bear a resemblance to surrealist motifs in Moore’s 1930s drawings, whilst others appear to be completely imaginary. Unlike the deep red background he used in the drawing, Moore chose a background of white with varying colourways for the symbols. The squaring of symbols also appears in the more complex textile drawing, HMF 2143, which was not put into production. This design was re-created without the squares, and set against the original deeply coloured background of the sketch, in TEX 19.
