Moore seems to have drawn and/or written on this sheet of paper on three different occasions. Underlying the pen and ink drawings on the recto are drawings done in crayon (or perhaps pencil). Bernard Meadows believes he saw Moore working on these in 1937. Two years later, Moore picked up the sheet and drew in pen and ink over the 1937 drawings. The upright stringed figure at the top is a lead and wire sculpture The Bride (LH 213) which was finished in Spring 1940. The sketch and notes on the verso refer to the nightly bombing of London which took place between September and November 1940. The meaning of the symbol S/m, which also appears on HMF 1338 verso, remains unknown.
