There remains some doubt concerning the date of this and the following page HMF 1296 since its verso has 1940 and an arrow, possibly not in the artist's hand, pointing to the top of this page. However since the figure marked by a cross at upper left is surely linked with Reclining Figure 1938 (LH 193) and the sketch almost centre page with a cross above it may be the germ for Reclining Figure 1939 (LH 203), the dating of c.1938 is retained. The figure on the extreme left of the second row from the bottom, propped up on its elbow-stumps, looks ahead to Reclining Figure 1945 (LH 252).
