More Information
This unusually small carving in African wonderstone was originally exhibited as part of The 34 Gallery, a miniature art gallery conceived by the London art dealer Sydney Burney (see 0017408). The "gallery" was exhibited at Chesterfield House, 1934, in the exhibition Children Throughout the Ages, in aid of Greater London Fund for the Blind (see 0009273). The work was later partially disbanded, and what remains of The 34 Gallery is now on display in the Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, after being discovered in a suitcase. Other artists originally included in the gallery included Barbara Hepworth, John Skeaping, Ben Nicholson, John Nash, Tristram Miller, Leon Underwood and Edward Wadsworth.
