Notebook No.2  p.31.  Moore told Wilkinson that the masks on the recto were the basis for Relief Head, 1923 (LH 9). On seeing the sculpture again in 1973, Moore commented, 'I didn't realise how much I'd been influenced by Gauguin'. He also said that his sister Mary had painted a reddish surround on the slate, which has since disappeared.
