This whimsical drawing (which may be seen as representing a dog), may have begun as what Moore called a 'pen exercise'. In the Wildenstein exhibition catalogue of 1979 he wrote of 'finding expressive pleasure in the free use of pen and ink', that is, drawing simply for the pleasure of it.
