Author/Editor: VERNON Mark
Publisher: FT Magazine
Place Published: London
Year: 2005
Date & Collation: 87 2005 (8 Jan) 37
Description: Article about art and religion. Reference to Alan Webster, Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, commissioning Moore to make a monumental artwork for Wren's church. Moore was reluctant saying that he was "long past taking commissions, certainly for Christian display - an overtly religious association he found limiting"; Unveiling of Mother and Child: Hood 1982 travertine marble (LH 851) in the north aisle on 27 March 1984. VERNON wrote that "it was the last significant sculpture Moore saw completed and the first ecclesiastical mother and child that he made since the 1940s".
VERNON described Moore as ambivalent, "on the one hand he thought that art was akin to religion. Art is premised on the belief that life is worth living; that life is worth glorifying is innate to religion. On the other hand, he had great doubts about religious art per se. What churches need are good artists not Christian artists. Hence the difference between a Madonna and child and a mother and child: the former, Moore said is prescriptive, the latter universal". VERNON notes that 500 years separate Raphael and Moore, but a generation or two on artists reject any alignment with religion, referencing Damien Hirst, Jeremy Deller, Renée Petropoulou and Raymond Pettibon.
