Year: 1976
Date & Collation: 199pp.Illus.
Description: Candid diary extracts which includes details, pages 53-57, of meeting Moore in 1955/6, at Newton Ferrers in Cornwall with Robert (Bertie") Abdy who had recently purchased a Moore sculpture. Beaton describes Moore as having a "plain pudding-face weak-eyes pale blue watery but bright a beaky nose and irregular somewhat parrot-beak teeth and a high forehead with receding hair laid flat and lifeless across the dome". There is mention of Moore's childhood and his early ambition to follow Michelangelo. Beaton recounts the time the three spent together; "The weekend continued in a most effervescing spirit of camaraderie. Henry played croquet wearing a ridiculous hat."
Page 56 shows a portrait of Moore standing beside Abdy's Draped Torso 1953 bronze (LH 338).

224-225(1 illus) Henry Moore.
Short reference to distortion of the human figure in Moore's sculpture and conflicting mention of Shelter drawings. The subjects are described as "stereotyped figures" expressing "no suggestion of specific human reaction". A "morbid depersonalization" is felt while "the otherwise inappropriate gaiety of the rather bright coloration refers to the good spirits of the people in resisting their hardship"."
