Description: SARGINSON Peter. Foreword.
(History of The Edward James Foundation, acknowledgements, and outline of the commissions).
MULLINS Edwin. Henry Moore's tapestries.
Exhibition of eight tapestries, translations into wool from drawings by Moore, by the Tapestry Studio at West Dean House under the direction of Eva-Louise Svensson. Photographs by Rosemary and Penelope Ellis showing the weaving techniques appear in the exhibition and in the catalogue; and there are demonstrations of the technique of tapestry weaving throughout the exhibition.
Mullins points out that tapestries are interpretations, not copies. Each of the five weavers at West Dean College exercised her own choice of colours, thickness, texture, etc. Moore expressed his excitement and pleasure at the process. Mullins' text outlines some historical aspects of tapestry; and stresses the texture of Moore's drawings. The transformation of scale to make them into large tapestries gives them a monolithic stature. Moore's commission was an act of patronage to West Dean, and it is hoped others will take advantage of the talents exhibited.
This exhibition travelled, including to U.S.A. and Canada (See 0001057) and New Zealand.
