Date & Collation: (May-June).86pp(49 illus).Biog.Statements by Henry MOORE (from conversations with Vera LINDSAY).Text by Alan WILKINSON.
Description: 98 Drawings 1922-1961 and two Textile prints 1947. The exhibition was in five sections, each introduced by Wilkinson, and incorporating some published statements by Moore.
Life Drawings; Drawings for Sculpture; Shelter Drawings; Coal Mine Drawings; Pictorial Drawings and Drawings for Sculpture in Settings. The introductions stress the importance of the female nude in Moore's work, both as pure drawings and as studies for sculpture. The early drawings possess strength and monumentality and have that aloofness and grandeur which characterize many of his greatest carvings". Moore's drawings up to the war presented a rapid means of expression in comparison to the process of carving. Organic forms provided an additional point of departure with the human figure. The impact of the war-time environment is expressed and produced the new element of drapery in Moore's work. The darkness in the Coal Mine Drawings is related to blackness in the works of Rembrandt and Seurat. Figures in Settings and the use of colour contributed to the main objective of showing three-dimensional form.
Brief selections from the 17 statements by Moore:Renaissance painters are as much sculptors as they are painters."I could get into such a state that this room would have so many forms in it that each one could be a new sculpture."The first year of the shelter drawings was for me a very exciting and unique period..."I have always been interested in what is happening in the world and felt that one should have a part in it however small that part might be."I don't think the artist completely creates the demand or completely fulfills a demand. I think there is an interplay between him and the public..."
Moore also speaks of the impact on him of Cézanne Michelangelo Grünewald and Masaccio. See also 0004704.
This exhibition and catalogue seem to have travelled 1970-1971 to Baukunst-Galerie (Cologne) and Galeria Toninelli (Rome). See also 00010797.
