262-304,etc(56 illus) Henry Moore: 16 Sculptures 1924-1964, four Drawings 1928-1929, one Print 1966.
Wilkinson's introduction attributes Moore's generation with a new perception of Primitive art. Moore's texts are quoted here, and in the section on his work, which is prefaced with a biographical note by Lucie Amyot. African and Pre-Columbian works are seen as generating influences on the young Moore's drawings and sculpture. Masks were an important early theme, followed by the obsession with the female Reclining Figure, also used as a metaphor for landscape. Paleolithic, Egyptian, Classical and Oceanic influences, sometimes through contemporary artists and Surrealism, are noted. Individual Sculpture works and Drawings are discussed in detail, particularly: Ideas for West Wind Relief, 1928 drawing; Reclining Woman, 1930 green Hornton stone; Reclining Figure, 1929 brown Hornton stone; Seated Figure, 1930 alabaster; Bird Basket, 1939 lignum vitae and string; Crowd Looking at a Tied-Up Object, 1966 etching; Mother and Child, 1953 plaster; Maquette for King and Queen, 1952 bronze; Upright Motive: Maquette No. 1, 1955 plaster; Time-Life Screen: Working Model, 1952 plaster.
