Description:

SKEAPING Nicholas. John Skeaping.
(Skeaping's son mentions the direct carving influence of Moore and Hepworth on his father and vice-versa).
HELY-HUTCHINSON Nicholas. Skeaping's association with Hepworth and Moore.
(Skeaping ranked equal to Hepworth and Moore until the breakdown of his marriage to Hepworth in 1931. The reclining figure was a theme common to all three. Skeaping and Moore reacted differently to their Italian visits. With Moore initially showing a classical legacy but soon leaning towards primitive influences. Skeaping's reclining figures were smooth and round, as Moore's were to become later due to familiarity with Skeaping's work. Moore's later use of space is also seen in the more rhythmic nature of Skeaping's figures. Skeaping had initiated the concept of the hole prior to 1930. The period 1925-1931 was formative for Moore and Hepworth, and mutually influenced by Skeaping).
SKEAPING John. A return to individuality.
(April 1954 text which mentions direct carving period with Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Leon Underwood and Richard Bedford).

ASTOR J.J. Memorial address in honour of Skeaping cites Moore as saying that no sculptor of his generation had more natural talent than Skeaping.
