Publisher: Quadrum

Year: 1956
Date & Collation: 1 1956(May) 107-117,218(13 illus).Text in English and French.
Description: 13 November 1954 interview at Much Hadham discussing artists of the past, and the internal conflict necessary to produce great art. Perfectionist art does not move me. Chinese painting is unsatisfactory to me. Yes I can appreciate it and find it very pleasing and decorative but something is missing." This disturbing element is noted in the writings of philosophers in Primitive art and in specific works by Moore. Moore refutes excesses of horror or despair in art and relates artistic production to the society in which it is produced.
In essence these thoughts are encapsulated as The Hidden Struggle in Henry Moore on Sculpture (See 0005627) and the Observer 24 November 1957 (See 0007392). Reprinted in Modern Art and the Modern Mind 1972 (See 0004246). A Finnish version appeared in Taide (Helsinki) in 1963 (See 0006398). For German version see 0007222 0007225 and 0007039."
