Description: Report that Reclining Figure: Festival, 1951 bronze, commissioned by the Arts Council for the Festival of Britain and subsequently loaned to Leeds Corporation at Temple Newsam, has been requested back. Ernest Musgrave reported that, if public opinion supported him, he would appeal for its retention. A similar report appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post of 16 Jan 1957. Correspondence and other brief comments continued in these newspapers for weeks following, mostly hostile and welcoming its departure, e.g. Yorkshire Evening Post, 19 Jan 1957 (See 0007369).

Description: The Director of Leeds Art Gallery and Temple Newsam House replies to the aggressive opposition to Reclining Figure: Festival, 1951 bronze. Moore's reputation should have produced tolerance and sympathy from his compatriots. True understanding depends on a specialised knowledge. Leeds will lose a great work of art, and his critics should have been less prejudiced. In the 15 March 1957 Yorkshire Post a short letter was published from Terry Frost, Harry Thubron, Eric Atkinson and David Lewis supporting Musgrave's positive attitude in seeking to acquire another Moore as a replacement.
