Description: Cover,19,24-26(4 illus) Henry Moore and the British Council.
The special role, acknowledged by Moore, of the British Council's Fine Arts Department in establishing his international reputation. Through exhibitions, starting with Brazil in 1943 (See 0008957), and by purchasing works by Moore for its permanent collection, in turn exhibited abroad. The exhibitions frequently led to the purchase of major sculptures by the city hosting the event. From funding by the British Council in the early years, the balance has swung to the Henry Moore Foundation paying an increasing share of the costs involved. Special mention of Florence (See 0004285), Madrid (See 0001840). Links between Moore and the Council continue with major exhibitions planned for México (See 0001472) and New York (See 0001077).
