Description: Modern Sculptors series. Eight-page introduction by Hodin, followed by selections from the writings of Henry Moore. Moore's work is placed against a background of 20th century consciousness. At the same time it is rooted in the English landscape, in human consciousness, and inspired by archaic and Primitive art. Moore builds monuments to the dramatic grandeur of nature." He is able to develop themes in his art by building on the experiments of earlier 20th century artists. The Reclining Figure and Mother and Child works are seen as dominant psychological archetypes in his oeuvre. Jungian and Gestalt writers on Moore are discussed briefly and their interpretations viewed in the "totality of a truly human outlook" and "a deeply founded artistic and human curiosity".

Large-format volume of sketches, some in colour, with some notes by Henry Moore. The book was designed by the artist in 1957, and includes Thirteen Standing Figures, 1958 lithograph. Grigson's three-page text is a poetic comment on Moore's work: Man in his dimensions of memory: in his images of the Great Mother of Christ of the Madonna; in what was made by the maker of an archaic Apollo or by Masaccio or the Mexican carver or the potter of Colima or the English potter of the Middle Ages." One of Moore's notes: "The great (the continual everlasting) problem (for me) is to combine sculptural form (power) with human sensitivity and meaning to try to keep the Primitive Power with humanist content." For Italian version of Grigson's text see 0009547. See also 0001370."
