More Information
On page 2 of letter of 2 January 1919. Although dated 'Jan 2nd 1918'. This letter written from France to his school friend Albert Wainwright 'after the Armistice was signed', indicates that Moore had made the common mistake of dating a January letter to the previous year. The sketch on the recto portrays Moore's French landlady, Madam Caron, at her sewing machine; that on the verso Madam Caron with another soldier, Allen, who was trying to speak French.
