This sketch was made to demonstrate to Curt Valentin and Marjorie Morse the technique of wax-resist drawing, as explained by Ann Garrould in the Introduction to Volume 2: 'Moore's sister Mary, her husband and their small daughter drove from Essex to see them and their new home. As usual, the child asked her uncle to draw something for her. She had brought with her a packet of wax crayons, newly purchased from a Woolworth's store en route to Burcroft. Moore began drawing in pencil and then asked if he might use the wax crayons. When he tried to add a watercolour wash, he discovered that wherever he had used wax, the paper rejected the watercolour' [ix.].
