This sketch appears on page 1 of a letter written by Moore on 1 August 1916 from his family home, 56 Smawthorne Lane, Castleford, to his school friend Donald Lawson. Moore, who was waiting to join the army, had just carved the lettering above the Castleford Secondary School's Roll of Honour, which bore the names of former pupils who had already enlisted.
