More Information
The drawings on the recto are linked with Carving 1934 LH 147, Four-Piece Composition: Reclining Figure 1934 LH 154 and Square Form 1936 LH 167. The sketch upper right of the verso recalls a plaster, Relief 1931 LH 103 which Moore still owned in the 1940s. It also looks forward to the stringed figures of the second half of the 1930s, for example Stringed Relief 1937 LH 182. The angularity and the constructivist elements in these sketches testify to Moore's awareness of the work of his contemporaries at this time. Naum Gabo, a Russian émigré sculptor, came from Germany to live in Hampstead in 1935. In 1936 Gabo and Moore, together with Nicholson, Piper, Mondrian, Leger, Calder and others, showed their work at touring exhibition called Abstract and Concrete visiting London, Oxford, Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne and Cambridge.
