An exhibition dedicated to the history of Surrealist art in Britain organised as part of the Gallery's recognised programme of Modern British Art.
The exhibition explores the roles played by literature, sculpture, cinema and photography alongside the crucial paintings to come out of the period and examines their artistic, political and intellectual significance in this country. Also included is a number of works by so-called 'pre-Surrealists' - artists and writers such as Henry Fuseli, William Blake, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Lewis Carroll.
The lead cast of Reclining Figure (LH 101) was included in the First International Exhibition of Surrealism in 1936, London.

Exhibition Info: Photographer Bill Brandt (1904-1983) and Henry Moore (1898-1986) first met during the Second World War when they both created images of civilians sheltering from the Blitz in the London Underground. Widely disseminated through news media and exhibitions, their haunting depictions of this human crisis became defining images of the war. This major exhibition begins with these early works and traces the artists’ parallel and intersecting paths across the post-war years, revealing their interdisciplinary range and the sculptural dimensions of photography, drawing and collage.
